Holy Week Timeline

Holy Week is a hallowed time of celebration and reflection for millions of Christians worldwide beginning on 10th April, 2022. The various Holy Week activities are based on the events in the Biblical gospels and depict the final days of Jesus Christ prior to his crucifixion.

Because these stories and the Jewish Passover fall on the same dates, academics have used these accounts to pinpoint the four major events of Holy Week: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. Christians assemble in homes and churches during these days of Holy Week to discuss the significance of the gospel narrative.

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday, the day that Christ returned to Jerusalem after giving his teachings across Israel, is the first day of Holy Week. Jesus’ supporters gathered to greet him when he arrived in the city, waving palm branches and using them to line the road in front of him. The start of Holy Week 2022 is marked by Palm Sunday, which is one of the most joyous occasions during the week.

Palm branches are used as decorations in churches, and during services, worshipers wave them. It serves as a reminder of Christians’ hope in God and is one of the events of Holy Week that fulfilled biblical prophecy.

Maundy Thursday

According to the biblical teachings, Christ and his disciples travelled back to Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish Passover. Scholars base the date of Holy Week on this date on the Jewish calendar. Jesus Christ established the custom of giving communion and washing his disciples’ feet during the Last Supper on this particular evening.

Maundy Thursday, which marks the beginning of Holy Week and foreshadows Christ’s death, is a solemn day when these traditions are commemorated and frequently carried out.

Good Friday

The day of Christ’s death, Good Friday is among the most significant days of Holy Week in Christianity. While what happens on the days of Holy Week varies around the world, the gospels in the Bible tell the story of his trial and execution.

Some churches and communities re-enact this day in its entirety by walking the Via Dolorosa, or the stations of the cross. Good Friday is the most solemn of all the Holy Week celebrations, and Christians typically wear all-black attire on this day.

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday is public a holiday enjoyed by both Christians and non-Christians around the world and it marks the conclusion of Holy Week. It is a celebration of faith, hope, and new life since, according to the Holy Bible, this was the day that Jesus was resurrected from the grave and appeared to his apostles once more.

Sunday church services start the day off, and then families come together to eat together. Decorating eggs, gifting Easter baskets, and egg hunts are some of the traditional Easter Sunday activities.
