(InStyle) -- To play hip, young New York fashion designer Melanie Carmichael, Reese Witherspoon went, well, legally blonder.
"We spent six hours making her platinum," says Magnet hairstylist Anne Morgan. "With her blue eyes and pale skin, I like the palette more."
But while her locks got lighter, her eyes got darker. "She's in smoky, smudged eyeliner," says makeup artist Brad Wilder. "It makes her look sexier and more mysterious."
How fitting, since Carmichael, who's engaged to the mayor's son (Patrick Dempsey), has a hidden past. She's already married -- to her high school sweetheart (Josh Lucas), who lives back home in Alabama. With Carmichael's sultry looks, the only mystery that remains is to which one she wants to be legally bonded.
Hair
Morgan began by applying Krastase Serum Nutri-Instant throughout Witherspoon's wet hair and Bumble and Bumble Thickening spray at the roots for texture. After blow-drying locks straight, she worked in a quarter-size dollop of MOP Pommade for control. Then she used a flatiron on the ends to create flips. Last, she made a side part and casually tucked hair behind the ears.
Eyes
For smoldering eyes, Wilder dusted Stila's Golightly shadow on lids and Java on the outer corners of the upper lash lines. Then he rimmed upper and lower lash lines with Laura Mercier Black Extreme eye pencil and smudged it with a Q-tip. "A little goes a long way," he says. Wilder finished with Laura Mercier Thickening and Building mascara in black.
Face
Wilder mixed Nars Balanced foundation in Sante Fe and Deauville, a slightly lighter shade, and brushed it on all over the face. Then he applied T. LeClerc pressed powder in Ivoire. On the apples of the cheeks, he used MAC powder blush in Fleur Power.
Lips
To keep Witherspoon's lips from competing with the dark makeup on her eyes, Wilder lightly applied Delux Beauty lip gloss in Norris.
